The margin decision
Which costs change when the tile starting point moves?
A layout can use fewer tiles and still require more cutting. Another can reduce both. Compare the variable work that changes between the two starting points rather than assuming that the lowest tile count is the cheapest installation.
Preparation, waterproofing, adhesive, grout, travel, overhead and profit still belong in your full quote. Do not describe a reduction in this partial model as the same percentage off the complete job.
How much cutting would cancel the material saving?
Use a break-even check when an option trades fewer tiles for more cuts. For example, at an assumed A$18 per tile and A$60/hour, one saved tile pays for 18 minutes of extra labour before any other difference. Six additional three-minute cuts would use that A$18.
This is an arithmetic illustration, not a claim about cutting speed. Batch cutting, setup, equipment, tile hardness and awkward pieces can change the time considerably.
Use one set of assumptions for both origins.
For the worked example we value tile at A$50/m²: A$18 for a 1200 × 300 mm unit. We use one minute of handling per new tile, three minutes per modelled cut and A$60/hour. These are demonstration inputs, not Australian market rates or measured productivity.
The 15-tile reduction accounts for A$270. Fewer tile-handling actions and 7 fewer cuts account for 36 modelled minutes, or A$36 at that rate. Together: A$306.
These publication rates reprice actual engine geometry. They differ from the app’s internal default action timings, so the example’s dollar total is not a promise that the live calculator will show the same quote.

What the difference looks like in Australian dollars.
Using the same 1200 × 300 mm tile and 45° herringbone pattern, we compared a seeded random room-corner start with a previously selected calculated alternative for each of ten redrawn apartment plans. The average estimated difference was A$845.87 per model, or 6.67% of material plus modelled handling/cutting cost. These are ten simulations, not completed jobs or a representative market sample.

Material, handling/cutting and combined columns show the percentage change against each plan’s own reference. A negative handling figure means the chosen plan models more work. The mean is an unweighted mean of the ten case percentages; the dollar mean is the average per plan, not a project quote. Plan 10 retains the same reference in this comparison. These averages do not predict a contractor’s saving.
How we priced the comparison
For this Sydney price scenario, Tilemall lists a 1200 × 300 mm porcelain tile at A$145.42 per 1.08 m² box (three tiles), as checked on 20 October 2026. The listing marks this as a conditional Google Shopping offer for eligible new online orders, with the final price confirmed at checkout; it is a pricing scenario, not a guaranteed purchase price. We round each option up to whole boxes. A Sydney tiling contractor quotes roughly A$60–A$120/hour for hourly work; A$90/hour is our illustrative midpoint, not an observed labour cost. We allow one minute per new tile handled and three minutes per modelled cut. Those action times are assumptions, not a site time study. This pricing scenario differs from the A$18/tile and A$60/hour demonstration above.
The ten anonymous outlines represent separate estimated apartment floors, all priced hypothetically at the same Sydney reference rates. The tileable boundaries were redrawn from marketing plans, so dimensions are approximate. Both options use the same floor, tile and no offcut reuse. The search checks candidate starts and may miss a better one; site appearance and buildability still need checking.
Delivery, fixed installation work, adhesive, grout, preparation, breakage and spare-stock allowances are excluded. A lower tile count is not automatically a lower waste-removal invoice: disposal value is excluded because a fixed skip charge might stay unchanged. Download the counts and pricing inputs →
Make the saving defensible before committing it.
Confirm the chosen start is buildable.
A low model cost does not override a threshold, movement joint, specified sightline or impractical edge cut.
Reconcile the model with purchasing.
Apply cartons, spares and breakage, then check whether the material order actually changes.
Use measured crew information when available.
Replace illustration rates with your own price and practical time estimate. Keep fixed disposal costs fixed unless the waste reduction changes the invoice.
Practical questions
Can fewer tiles still mean a more expensive layout?
Yes. Additional cutting or awkward handling can outweigh the material saving. Price both sides of the trade-off rather than choosing from tile count alone.
Why are the single-case and ten-plan prices different?
They are separate scenarios. The single case assumes A$18 per tile and A$60/hour without carton rounding. The ten-plan scenario uses A$145.42 per three-tile box and A$90/hour. Neither measures actual crew productivity.
Should I use the ten-plan average in a customer quote?
No. It is an unweighted average of ten selected simulations, not a representative prediction. Recalculate the customer’s measured floor and use their tile specification, purchasing rules and your crew’s rates.
